A belated Happy New Year to everyone! After a much needed internet-free holiday break, the creative juices are flowing again. It might seem like there’s nothing going on (where are all the shows?) but in reality so much is happening. New songs with new sounds and beats are taking shape in our cold basement Chinatown rehearsal space. Without good songs, we have nothing. After spending much of last year working the new album, we are staying behind closed doors for a while to make new good, make that great, songs. The greatest gift an artist can have is continued inspiration. Maybe it’s the Chinese New Year, or maybe that holiday break really did the trick. Whatever is, I haven’t felt this creative since I started the band. Being an independent band means having to wear all the hats. So when creativity knocks it’s best to answer the door, invite her in, court her, and make something special. – Sandra

The release of our third studio album, El Desierto Y La Ciudad, (as well as that of our side project for families, Moona Luna), lots of shows and happy audiences, new friends in new cities and familiar supportive faces singing the words. There are cities we didn’t get to in 2011 that we hope to reach next year. Thank you to everyone for your support. Whether you came to a show, or told your friends to go, or bought our CD’s, or wrote us a nice email. We are so grateful and look forward to bringing you more great music in 2012.

Two other Mexican artists based in the U.S. have also been creating their own hybrids. New York-based Pistolera’s latest album, El Desierto y La Ciudad, takes the group’s sound in a new direction. Where they had been spunky rockers imbuing their music with Mexican rhythms and the folksy huffs of an accordion, El Desierto is more elegiac. In fact, frontwoman Sandra Lilia Velazquez’s voice is, at times, reminiscent of David Hidalgo of Los Lobos at his most beseeching. Read the Full Article

Both venues were fantastic in their own way as were the people than ran them. It was great to see familiar faces as well as new ones. We are back in New York for just a couple days before we head out on tour again with our family friendly bilingual alter-ego, Moona Luna. It’s been a great year. We hope to return to the Midwest in 2012! Until then amigos….

As a kid I dreamed of growing up and working for them one day. Being able to travel the world and report on various cultures sounded just perfect. Instead I grew up to become a musician who gets to travel the world and bring my own culture to others. Not so bad either! Check It Out
